5 Water Safety Tips Every Parent Should Know!

Source: Houston Swim Club

1. Sign your child up for swim lessons!!

Swim Lessons could save your child’s life! Make sure you get them in swim lessons at a young age. It is vital that they understand that water, while very pretty and cool to play in, is dangerous! Make sure that getting your child in swim lessons is on the top of your list, especially if your home has a pool.

2. Know where your child is at all times.

All too often, we see parents that do not supervise their children while they are in the pool. An accident only takes a second and a tragedy less than that. We ask that parents be within 3 feet of your child if they are not a strong swimmer, or a non-swimmer.

3. Make the pool you have safer.

If you have a pool at your residence inhabited by children, we recommend that you put up a fence that is at least 5 feet tall and impossible to climb. That being said, children are crafty and can find a way to get on or in anything. Yes, children can still climb locked pool stairs. Always keep an eye on your children when they are in and around the pool and don’t leave pool floats in the pool when not in use. This can result in a good swimmer not being able to get up for breath!

4. Never rely on flotation devices, EVER!

Flotation devices, such as floaties, rafts, water wings, noodles and inner tubes are not to be trusted! Yes, they are nice to relax on once you know your way around the water, but they can pop and render your child helpless. Water wings also teach children to swim vertically instead of horizontally, which can lead to them not being able to get back to the pool wall, even if they are very close.

5. Have some safety gear, just in case.

Always have a phone handy while you are near or in water. If EMS is needed, you can easily summon them by calling 911. Have something that can be extended to the person in distress. It is not a good idea to go into the water to retrieve them because while they are panicking, they may drown you while trying to get air… and then EMS has two people to save. Lastly, get CPR certified! CPR is an amazing skill that can save someone’s life!
